Alternatively if you are looking to make Byron a part of a longer Australia trip make sure to check out my other posts. All the way up to Cairns and over to Esperance in Western Australia.

Getting There

By Air:

The quickest way to reach Byron Bay is by flying into Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (BNK), which is about a 30-minute drive from the town. Direct flights operate from major cities like Sydney and Brisbane. From the airport, you can take a shuttle, taxi, or even rent a car for the scenic drive to Byron. Make sure to check the shuttle times before booking your flight, if the shuttle isn’t running the cost of a taxi could be more than that cheaper flight ticket.

By Bus:

Alternatively, consider taking a bus from Sydney or Brisbane. Several services, like Greyhound and Premier Motor Service, offer comfortable rides to Byron Bay. This option lets you sit back and enjoy the views along the way. We got the Greyhound bus from Surfers Paradise and it was a lovely relaxing journey completed in about 3 hours.

Best Time to Visit

Byron Bay boasts a temperate climate, making it a year-round destination. However, the best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May), when the weather is mild, crowds are smaller, and accommodation prices are more reasonable.

Day 1: Exploring Nature and Local Flavours

Sunrise at Cape Byron Lighthouse

Start your adventure early with a breathtaking sunrise at the Cape Byron Lighthouse. It’s the easternmost point of mainland Australia, and the views are simply unforgettable. Arrive before dawn to find a good spot and watch the sun paint the sky in hues of orange and pink.

Morning Kayak with Dolphins

After soaking in the sunrise, head to the beach for a morning kayak tour. Local companies offer guided tours where you can paddle alongside playful dolphins and maybe even spot sea turtles. It’s an exhilarating way to experience the marine life in the area! With over 300 dolphins living around the Cape area you are guaranteed to see at least a few.

Lunch at FishHeads Takeaway

After your morning adventures, grab a bite at Fishheads Takeaway. Located right on the beach, this spot is known for its fresh, affordable fish and burgers. You can enjoy your meal with your toes in the sand—a quintessential Byron experience. We enjoyed a meal for two which included prawns, calamari and fresh fish and chips pictured below.

Afternoon at the Beach

Post-lunch, spend your afternoon lounging on the beach or swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Main Beach. If you’re feeling adventurous, try your hand at surfing; there are plenty of surf schools around for beginners.

As evening approaches, head to Grill’d for some delicious, fresh burgers and chicken. This casual eatery focuses on quality ingredients and offers a variety of tasty options, including vegetarian and gluten-free choices. Also offering cost effective family meals that can work for groups of friends just aswell.

Day 2 Relaxation and Indulgence

Walk to Fishermans Lookout

Start your second day with a morning stroll along the beach to Fisherman’s Lookout. The trail is relatively easy and offers stunning coastal views. If you’re lucky, you might spot dolphins frolicking in the waves or even a whale migrating off the coast during the season (June to November). Additionally if you look straight down you should be able to spot a number of Turtles. During our visit we were fortunate enough to see two pods of dolphins, two whales and at least three turtles. However, this came with patience if you don’t see anything straight away make sure to wait and the glorious marine life will come.
