Budapest, the capital of Hungary, is a city full of charm, history, and architectural wonders. Whether you are a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply looking to explore a new destination, Budapest has something to offer. With its abundance of attractions and an easy-to-navigate layout, Budapest is the ideal destination for a memorable getaway. Here is a four-day itinerary to make the most of your time in this beautiful city.
Best time to visit
The best time to explore Budapest is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) seasons when the weather is pleasant and the city is less crowded. Additionally, visiting during the Christmas season can be a truly magical experience as the city transforms into a winter wonderland, adorned with festive decorations and enchanting Christmas markets.
Day 1: Ruin bars and Parliament
After landing and dropping your bags at your hotel, start your adventure by exploring the local area. Wander through the charming streets, immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere, and admire the stunning architecture. As the sun sets, make your way to one of Budapest’s famous ruin bars for a drink. These old, abandoned buildings turned unique bars have a distinct charm and are a must-visit with their blend of retro decor, live music, and strong drinks. Afterwards, take a leisurely walk along the Danube River and enjoy the breathtaking views of the iconic Parliament Building that dominates the cityscape.

Day 2: Historical City Walk
After breakfast, begin your day with a walk across the river to Fisherman’s Bastion, a fairytale-like complex with turreted walls, providing panoramic views of the city. Before visiting St. Matthias Church, closely located behind. These iconic landmarks showcase stunning Gothic and Romanesque architecture, so take some time to take in the views and embrace the history surrounding you. Continue your journey by visiting Buda Castle, a historical palace complex that houses various museums and galleries while offering breathtaking views across the Danube River.
Before taking a walk across the Chain Bridge, the first bridge to connect Buda and Pest. There, you will find a local market where you can indulge in a delightful lunch of traditional Hungarian goulash. If you’re up for it, take a walk to Hero’s Square, a symbolic location filled with statues representing Hungary’s historic leaders. In the evening, treat yourself to a relaxing meal at Pointers Pub, a unique English/Hungarian pub that offers a blend of flavours and an inviting atmosphere.

Day 3: Budapest Shooting
For a different experience, venture to a shooting range. Budapest has several ranges that offer the opportunity to try out real, usable firearms under professional guidance. This thrilling and adrenaline-filled activity is a unique addition to your trip. We visited Budapest Shooting, and it was honestly an experience that I will remember forever. Afterwards, grab some lunch before heading over to the Citadel. Situated on Gellért Hill, the Citadel offers breathtaking views of the city and is a perfect spot to watch the sunset. You can either get a taxi or walk about 20 minutes up. Conclude the day with a delightful dinner, savouring both the local cuisine and the beauty of Budapest.
Day 4: City park
On your last day, enjoy a relaxed itinerary. Start by walking down to City Park, where you can admire the beautiful Vajdahunyad Castle and even try ice skating at the nearby ice rink during winter. Afterwards, head to the Central Market, a bustling hub of local vendors selling fresh produce, Hungarian delicacies, and traditional crafts. It’s a great place to find souvenirs and immerse yourself in the local culture. Before bidding Budapest farewell, take a moment to reflect on the city’s rich history and vibrant atmosphere.
Additional activities
If you are staying in Budapest longer or just want to experience as much as you can during your time here, there are many more activities you can do. You can go for an amazing river cruise either during the day or at night and take in the views from both sides of the river. Or if you are looking for relaxation and refreshment, Budapest thermal baths are a great experience in any weather and a different way to experience the history and culture of the city.
