Magnetic Island, located just off the coast of Townsville, Queensland, is a tropical paradise teeming with wildlife, stunning beaches, and vibrant local culture. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or simply looking to relax, this island offers a perfect getaway. Here’s everything you need to know for an unforgettable visit.

Best time to visit

The ideal time to visit Magnetic Island is during the dry season, from May to October. The weather is pleasantly warm, making it perfect for outdoor activities. Avoid the rainy season from November to April, when humidity can be high and storms are more frequent. This period is also stinger season so if visiting make sure to either swim at horseshoe or picnic bay as they both have stinger nets. If wanting to swim outside of the nets makesure to buy or hire a stinger suit on the island.

How long to stay

Two to three days is sufficient to explore the island’s main attractions. This timeframe allows you to relax and soak in the sights without feeling rushed. Many people visit Magnetic Island as a day trip from Townsville. However, I would recommend at least one night to fully enjoy the island.

Getting around

Transportation on Magnetic Island is straightforward. The $1 bus day pass is a fantastic option, providing access to key locations and conveniently syncing with ferry arrivals at the port. For a more adventurous exploration, consider hiring a car to reach off-the-beaten-path spots.

Must see attractions

Horseshoe Bay

Start your journey at Horseshoe Bay, located on the island’s northern side. This picturesque beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying water sports. If you’re visiting on a Sunday, don’t miss the local arts and crafts market, where you can find unique souvenirs and handmade goods. This was my preferred bay to swim in during my visit to the island. As the water is warmer and there is more of a gradient to give you more depth in the sea.

Breakfast with koalas

Kick off your day with a truly memorable experience at Salina Hostel. Their “Breakfast with Koalas” program lets you enjoy a delicious meal while learning about these adorable marsupials up close. It’s a must-do for wildlife enthusiasts!

The Forts Walk

For those looking to combine exercise with breathtaking views, the Forts Walk is a highlight. This 2.5 km hike takes you through scenic landscapes, leading to historical military forts and offering stunning panoramic views of the island. Keep your eyes peeled for wild koalas resting in the trees along the way. We were lucky enough to spot three during our visit.

Hawkins point lookout

Venture to the southern part of the island for the Hawkins Point Lookout. The walk here rewards you with exceptional views of Picnic Bay and Townsville in the distance to the south. Aswell as geourgeous views of the islanda coastline to the north. It’s an ideal spot for a moment of reflection amidst nature’s beauty.

Picnic Bay

If you prefer a quieter beach experience, Picnic Bay is the place to be. This serene location is perfect for a leisurely swim or a relaxing day on the sand, away from the busier tourist spots. It’s great for families or all ages as the waters from the bay are shallow. But still offers dock jumping a little along the bay for the more adventurous.

Geoffrey Bay and Rock Wallabies

No visit to Magnetic Island is complete without seeing the rock wallabies at Geoffrey Bay. These charming creatures can often be spotted near the rocks, especially during feeding times in the late afternoon. Feel free to bring them some snacks like carrots or rock wallaby food found in nearby stores. However, please note that wallabies can only digest certain food, so please take note of the do not feed lists dotted around. If you have patience, then you will be able to see lots of wallabies. However, they are shy wild animals, so loud noises and sudden moves could scare them away.
