Bangkok, the vibrant capital of Thailand, is a city that seamlessly blends ancient traditions with modern attractions. From stunning temples to bustling markets and unique experiences, there is no shortage of things to do in this exciting city. If you’re visiting for the first time, I have a few recommendations that will leave you with unforgettable memories!

1. Visit the Ancient City (Muang Boran)

One of the standout experiences in Bangkok, and my personal favorite, is a visit to the Ancient City (Muang Boran). This massive outdoor museum is an absolute must-see for history buffs and anyone wanting to step back in time. To get there, take the train to the end of the line at Kheha Station, then hop on a bus for just 25p. It’s a budget-friendly and scenic ride that sets the stage for your adventure.

The Ancient City is home to over 100 historical replicas of Thailand’s most iconic structures, including temples, palaces, and traditional Thai homes. With its expansive grounds, the best way to get around is by bike. I opted to hire one, and though the bikes are a little older and not the most well-maintained, it was a fun and unique way to explore the site. Just be prepared for a bit of a workout, as some areas can be a bit of a challenge.

If cycling isn’t your thing, there are other options: you can hop on a shuttle that takes you to four of the larger buildings (with stops lasting about 20–30 minutes). This will give you a taste of the site but won’t cover everything. For the most convenience (though a bit pricier), you can rent a golf cart to zip around the site in comfort.

Alternatively you can book a tour direct from the city centre that will take you to the ancient city as well as around it. Look below to find one that suits you.

2. Sam Phra Nakhon Dragon Temple

For something truly unique, consider visiting the Sam Phra Nakhon Dragon Temple, a temple unlike any other. It’s a huge, colorful dragon-shaped structure that will make for some great photos. To get there, you’ll need to take a Grab or taxi, as it’s not easily accessible by public transport. While this temple is an interesting stop, I would recommend it more for a second visit to Bangkok, especially if you’re short on time during your first trip.

3. Terminal 21: A Shopping Experience Like No Other

If you’re in the mood for shopping, make sure to visit Terminal 21, a mall with a twist! Each floor of the mall is designed to resemble a different international destination, from Tokyo to London to San Francisco. It’s a fun and immersive way to experience various cultures while enjoying a wide range of shops and food courts offering international cuisine. I spent hours exploring and still didn’t see everything!

4. Wat Arun: The Temple of Dawn

A visit to Bangkok wouldn’t be complete without seeing Wat Arun, one of the city’s most beautiful and iconic temples. Its intricate architecture and stunning riverside location make it a must-see. The best way to enjoy the temple is from the river, so I highly recommend taking a public transport boat along the Chao Phraya River. For less than £1, you’ll get a scenic view of the city while passing by this breathtaking temple. It’s a peaceful and picturesque way to experience Bangkok!

5. Khao San Road: A Vibrant Hub of Culture

No trip to Bangkok is complete without experiencing the chaotic and vibrant Khao San Road. Whether you visit during the day or night, this iconic street offers an eclectic mix of street food, bars, shops, and backpacker culture. By day, you can explore the local shops and markets, while by night, the street comes alive with music, food stalls, and bustling nightlife. It’s a great place to soak up the energy of the city!

Where to Stay: El Biografo Hostel

During my trip, I stayed at El Biografo Hostel, which was an excellent choice for budget-conscious travellers. The accommodation was not only affordable but also comfortable, offering free breakfast and a super-friendly staff. It’s located in a convenient area and provides a great base for exploring all that Bangkok has to offer.

Bangkok is a city full of contrasts, where the old meets the new, and every corner offers something different. Whether you’re exploring ancient temples, cycling through historical sites, or shopping at quirky malls, there’s something for everyone in this energetic metropolis. Make sure to plan ahead, but leave room for spontaneity—it’s the best way to discover all of the amazing things this city has to offer!

Whether Bangkok is your first Thailand destination or your last it is a must visit and with, almost unlimited transport links the decision for where to go next can be difficult. I visited Bangkok from Koh Samui but check out my other Thailand posts to decide where you go next.
