Esperance, located on the southern coast of Western Australia, is a hidden gem known for its stunning beaches and breathtaking landscapes. Whether you’re a beach bum, nature enthusiast, or simply looking to escape the hustle and bustle, Esperance offers a slice of paradise. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.
Getting There
To reach Esperance, the most convenient option is to fly into Esperance Airport (EPR) from major cities like Perth. We flew with Regional Express and the staff were lovely and offered a smooth service. Alternatively, you can embark on a scenic road trip, taking in the picturesque landscapes along the way. If you’re driving, the journey from Perth takes about 8-10 hours, so plan accordingly.
Getting around
While there are local transport options, hiring a car is the best way to explore Esperance and its surrounding attractions. With a rental car, you can easily navigate the stunning coastline and visit remote beaches at your own pace. There are only two car hire options though from the airport Budget and Avis, so make sure to compare prices and book before you travel. Do make sure to be careful when driving especially at night as many animals lay in and cross the road.

Beaches To Visit
Esperance is famous for its pristine beaches, lining the coast as far as the eye can see each with there own unique charm:
1. Alexander Bay
This stunning beach is a bit of a trek to reach, taking around an hour and a half from the town of Esperance. However, the effort is worth it for the breathtaking views. Be prepared for a more adventurous journey as access can be tricky. I would advise to only visit if you are comfortable driving on unsealed roads and are up for a little bush walk.

2. Duke of Orleans Bay
Known for its long stretch of sand, this beach is beautiful but be mindful of the flies. It’s a great spot for a stroll, but bring some insect repellent! Located an hour from town with a campsite on the beach making it a convenient location to stay and visit those beaches a little further away.

3. Cape Le Grand & Wylie Bay
These two beaches are accessible miles apart or if you are a confident 4WD driver they are connected and offer stunning scenery, especially when free of seaweed. Unfortunately, during our visit, both ends of the bay were covered in seaweed, making it a bit smelly.
4. Hellfire Bay
This is arguably the highlight of the beaches in the area and my personal favourite. Hellfire Bay boasts powdery white sand and crystal-clear water, sheltered from the wind and with fewer flies, making it perfect for a relaxing day. It also offers a large, flat rock to the side of the beach which you can easily climb and admire the bay from above. Alternatively if you are an avid fisherman the rock houses tie off rings to offer you a safe fishing experience.

5. Lucky Bay
Famous for its picturesque views and resident kangaroos, Lucky Bay is ideal for swimming when the water warms up. However, we visited three times without spotting any kangaroos, so try not to get your hopes up. If you do want to increase your chances of spotting a wild roo though Lucky Bay has a campsite that can be rebooked and visitors often say the roos come to visit them when cooking. Nevertheless the beauty of the bay more than made up for it.

6. Twilight Bay
Great for families, Twilight Bay is the only patrolled beach in the area, making it safe for swimming. Just note that the patrol is only active during certain times, and there can be a distinct sulfur smell in the water. Located close to town though is definitely an option for warmer days.
7. Eleven Mile Beach
Another stunning option along the Great Ocean Drive, Eleven Mile Beach offers a gorgeous view. However, accessing the beach requires descending quite a few stairs. Located less than a 20 minute drive from Esperance town is still a must visit if only for the views.

Things To Do When the Weather isn’t Ideal
If the weather doesn’t cooperate or you’re looking for a break from the beach, consider trying some indoor activities
Paint-by-numbers
We bought a range of paint by numbers kits from the local Khub and drove down to the beach to spend a few hours painting them under one of the public shelters. It was a great way to spend a morning and a nice change from beach hopping. Alternatively there is an art centre in town that offers classes during the week from simple painting to glass blowing.
Mini Golf
If here on a weekend there is a large indoor mini golf great for the whole family however, it is only open Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 3pm.
Esperance Museum
Esperance Museum offers a unique and interesting glimpse into the history of the region since European settlement. A great activity to keep the family entertained.

Dining Options
Esperance has a laid-back dining scene, with many visitors opting for BBQs. However, if you prefer dining out, keep in mind that many places close early. For a delicious lunch or afternoon snack, head to Dome Café, which is open until 3:30 PM and offers a variety of tasty food and drinks. Alternatively if you wish to eat later there are a range of fast food options around the town as well as multiple Chinese restaurants.
Lucky Bay Brewery is located not too far from town and offers a range of different food throughout the week. Including Roasts on Sundays and Burger Thursdays. However, they offer woodfire pizzas consistently throughout the week till 7pm everyday they are open.

Esperance is a beautiful destination that captivates with its stunning natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere. Whether you’re lounging on the beach, exploring the national parks, or enjoying a meal at a local café, there’s something for everyone. Plan your visit to experience the breathtaking landscapes and serene beaches that make Esperance a true treasure in Western Australia.
