Unravel the Wonders of the Gili Islands!

No matter which island of the Gili Islands you visit, the marine life is thriving and full of wonders. Turtles are abundant, and you can easily spot them while snorkelling or diving in the crystal-clear waters surrounding the islands. Gili Air is particularly famous for its underwater statues, and you can either walk out from the beach or join a boat trip to explore this unique underwater attraction. Whether you’re an experienced diver or a beginner snorkeler, the Gili Islands offer a fantastic opportunity to come face to face with some of the most beautiful marine life in the world.

When To Visit

If you’re planning a trip to the Gili Islands, the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, you can expect plenty of sunshine, warm temperatures, and minimal rainfall, making it the perfect time to hit the beach. Keep in mind, however, that this is also peak tourist season, so you may encounter larger crowds and higher prices. If you’re looking for a more laid-back experience, consider visiting during the shoulder months of April or October when the crowds are thinner and the prices more reasonable. Just be aware that there may be a greater chance of rain during these months. No matter when you go, the Gili Islands are a stunning destination that should not be missed!

Getting around

One of the most unique things about the Gili Islands is that they are completely non-motorised. This means that the only ways to get around the islands are by walking, cycling, or using horse and cart transportation. The lack of motor vehicles creates a peaceful and laid-back atmosphere, and it allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the island’s tranquil natural beauty. Walking and cycling are great ways to explore both the main tourist hubs and the quieter, less-trodden paths among the stunning coconut groves. Horse and cart transportation, known locally as cidomo, is another popular option that allows visitors to explore the islands in a more leisurely way. Overall, the absence of motor vehicles makes the Gili Islands an excellent destination for those seeking a slower, more peaceful pace of life.

Additionally getting between the islands is simple due to the multiple boats that go between them. You can either get the fast ferry boat which, will only take 5-10 minutes or the local ferry boat which not only start earlier in the day but also cost less than £2.50 return and only take 10-15 minutes. Either way it is a relaxing journey surrounded by beautiful scenery that cannot be missed.

Hotel recommendation

While I loved visiting all of the Gili islands and it would have been nice to on any of them, I chose to stay on Gili Trawangan and I recommend all first timers to do the same. This is due to the accessibility to other islands as well as the various food options and of course lots of beautiful beaches. However, if you are just looking for a romantic getaway with the feeling of being on an isolated island I would recommend one of the smaller islands.

I stayed at Giliranta a beautiful little homestay with a courtyard surrounded by half a dozen large huts overlooking the beautiful serene pool. With a great location only a 5 minute walk to the beach, I enjoyed my stay here and would definitely stay again. If you want to stay on Gili Trawangan look to see if Giliranta is for you otherwise why not explore booking.com to find where to spend your island getaway.
