Koh Tao, the smallest of the three main islands in Thailand’s south, stole my heart the moment I arrived. After traveling through the popular spots like Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, I can honestly say that Koh Tao quickly became my favourite island—not just in the south, but in all of Thailand (with the exception of Thailands southernmost island, Koh Lipe!). From its laid-back vibe and stunning beaches to the crystal-clear waters and mesmerising marine life, Koh Tao is a perfect destination for travellers seeking both adventure and tranquility.
Tante Bay: A Hidden Gem for Swimmers and Snorkelers
One of the most unforgettable places on the island is Tanote Bay. It’s the perfect spot for a peaceful swim, a bit of snorkelling, and for those seeking a thrill, a chance to take a leap from a large rock just off the shore. The rock, just a short swim away, has become a popular spot for cliff jumping, offering a fun, adrenaline-pumping experience with a spectacular view of the bay below.

But what really sets Tanote Bay apart is the underwater world. The bay is home to vibrant coral reefs, schools of colourful fish, and the occasional sea turtle. It’s a serene spot, away from the crowds, making it ideal for those who want to enjoy a day of relaxation by the sea without the noise of large tour groups.
Ao Leuk Bay: Swim With Reef Sharks
If you’re a fan of marine life, Koh Tao has something truly special to offer. If you want to swim with reef sharks this is the place to go. I’ve had the thrill of encountering sharks ranging from tiny baby sharks to ones that can grow up to 3 meters long. They are curious, yet gentle creatures, often gliding by in the shallows, offering an unforgettable experience for snorkelers. Try to go earlier in the morning as before it gets busy they are a lot more confident and will swim alongside you.

Shark Bay: Swim With Turtles
Unlike the name suggests it not sharks that make Shark Bay a must-see; it’s home to some of the largest turtles I’ve seen in all my travels. There’s a small, free-entry beach just up the road from the paid entry resort, where you can wade out to a spot where the turtles love to swim. However, be mindful—many snorkel and dive boats visit the area, meaning the turtles are often surrounded by crowds. As much as it’s a dream to see these majestic creatures up close, it’s crucial to remember that they are wild animals and should be respected. Keep your distance and allow them to enjoy their natural habitat without disturbance.
John-Suwan Viewpoint: Breathtaking Views
For the best panoramic views of the island, make sure to visit the John-Suwan Viewpoint. Situated at the southern tip of Koh Tao, it’s a short but steep climb up a stack of rocks (about 15-20 minutes), but trust me, it’s worth every step. From the top, you get a jaw-dropping view of the island’s bays and beaches on both sides. The soft, early morning light casts a magical glow over the island, and if you go early enough, you’ll likely have the place all to yourself. There’s nothing quite like watching the sun rise over the sparkling blue waters, with the entire island spread out beneath you.

After taking in the views, head down to Freedom Beach. It’s a little slice of paradise—quiet, serene, and perfect for a swim. Grab a lounge chair, relax, and enjoy the clear waters that will cool you off after your climb. This little beach is ideal for unwinding and soaking in the island’s natural beauty.
Koh Tao’s Culinary Delights: Where to Eat
No trip to Koh Tao is complete without indulging in some local food. Two restaurants stood out during my time on the island. First, there’s All About Chai, a delightful Indian restaurant serving some of the best and most affordable Indian food I’ve had outside of India. The set meals are packed with authentic flavours and offer great value for money.

Then, there’s Treehouse Café, which offers not only delicious local dishes but also breathtaking views. Set in a picturesque spot on the island, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a meal while overlooking the turquoise waters and lush greenery.

Scuba Diving and Beyond: More to Discover on Koh Tao
Koh Tao is well-known for its affordable scuba diving courses, which makes it a haven for diving enthusiasts and first-timers alike. The waters around the island are teeming with marine life, from colourful reefs to schools of fish, and even the occasional turtle or shark. If you’re new to diving, this is the perfect place to take your certification, but even if you’re not into diving, Koh Tao has so much more to offer beyond the usual dive spots.
Explore the hidden beaches and scenic viewpoints like those mentioned above, or rent a scooter and roam around the island to discover quiet, secluded coves. Whether you’re into hiking, swimming, or just lounging on a beach with a good book, Koh Tao has something for everyone.
Nang Yuan Island: A Little Slice of Paradise (If you don’t mind the fees)
If you’ve got a bit more time and a little extra cash, make sure to visit Nang Yuan Island, just a short boat ride from Koh Tao. The island is a small, beautiful spot, known for its iconic sandbar connecting two small islands. But be aware—it’s a bit pricey to visit. There’s an entry fee for the island, and an additional charge if you want to snorkel there. You’ll also find a similar hike to John-Suwan Viewpoint, so it’s another great place to get a stunning view of the surrounding waters.
Getting to Koh Tao
There are many different ways to get to Koh Tao depending, on where you’re coming from. I came from Khao Sok and got a mini van to Surat Thani and then a rather comfortable night boat over to Koh Tao. Upon my departure I took a catamaran from the pier to Koh Phangan. I used 12Go to book the majority of my travel around Asia.

Koh Tao is the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left. Whether you’re diving with sharks, enjoying a cliff jump at Tanote Bay, or simply soaking in the view from John-Suwan, there’s a certain magic to this little island that makes it unforgettable. While it’s often overlooked in favor of its more famous neighbors, Koh Tao is a treasure trove of beauty, serenity, and adventure. If you’re looking for a mix of outdoor activities, laid-back vibes, and incredible natural beauty, Koh Tao is the island you’ve been searching for.
Until next time, I’ll be dreaming of that crystal-clear water, the sandy beaches, and the gentle sea turtles that made my time on Koh Tao truly unforgettable.
