Getting around
An essential for visiting the Kruger National Park is a hire car I used discover cars and they were great even upgraded our car for free. I chose them due to the fact that they allow collection and drop of points to be different meaning if you plan a cross country road trip like I have linked above you can fly in and out of different airports with ease. Day 1: Exploring Phalaborwa Gate and Satara Rest Camp
Begin your day bright and early by entering the park through Phalaborwa Gate and heading north. This region is known for its thriving elephant and deer populations, providing awe-inspiring opportunities for wildlife sightings. As you make your way towards Satara Rest Camp, immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscapes and keep your eyes peeled for other remarkable animals along the route. At Satara Rest Camp, enjoy top-notch amenities such as a shop, swimming pool, and launderette to ensure a comfortable stay.
Top Tip: Make sure to be at your rest camp by 18:00 as this is when they shut the gates due to the animals hunting. You can still go on guided night safaris.
Day 2: Roaming from Satara to Skukuza Rest Camp
From Satara, venture into both the northern and southern areas in search of captivating creatures that populate this diverse ecosystem. Whether it’s spotting elusive elephants or wild boars or even witnessing majestic lions if luck smiles upon you, there won’t be a single dull moment during this adventure. Opt for less-traveled paths as they often offer better chances of encountering rarer animal species. After a day filled with awe-inspiring encounters, recharge at Skukuza Rest Camp—a convenient base for further exploration.
Top Tip: Remember to bring battery packs and car chargers, to charge your phones and cameras as loadshedding occurs often in the park.
Day 3: Unforgettable Encounters and Departure
On your final day at Kruger National Park, leisurely make your way towards Malelane Gate situated in the southern part of the park. Once again, take advantage of lesser-known routes as they significantly enhance your chances of spotting lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, deer, and if luck truly smiles upon you, the elusive rhinos—the rarest members of the famous “Big 5.” As your Kruger National Park safari journey draws to a close, the memories and remarkable wildlife sightings will forever be etched in your mind.
What Are The ‘Big 5’
The term “Big Five” originated in the early days of African safaris, when hunters coined it to describe the five most challenging and sought-after animals to hunt on foot: the African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, African leopard, and rhinoceros. However, in today’s context, the Big Five represents the most coveted wildlife encounters for avid photographers, nature enthusiasts, and conservationists alike.
