Exploring Castles, Relaxing Spas, and Indulging in Romanian Cuisine
Welcome to Transylvania, a region famed for its captivating folklore, medieval castles, and breathtaking landscapes. Join me as I share my memorable long weekend trip to this enchanting part of Romania and hopefully help you plan yours. Starting with our arrival in Bucharest.
Day 1: Bucharest and Sinaia – A Perfect Balance
After landing at Bucharest Airport, we were faced with the delightful dilemma of choosing where to stay – Bucharest or Sinaia. Opting for convenience, we decided to base ourselves in Bucharest. The city, known for its lively atmosphere and fascinating history, offered a range of accommodation and excellent transport links. However, if you’re seeking a more relaxed and visually stunning setting Sinaia, just over an hour away from the airport, is an alluring option. If i was to visit again or if you have more time in the country I would recommend.

Day 2: Explore Transylvania’s Castle Circuit
Our second day began with a visit to Sinaia Castle, an exquisite royal palace nestled amidst the Carpathian Mountains. This architectural masterpiece, also known as Peleș Castle, captivated us with its fairytale-like charm and opulent interiors. This was my favourite of all the castles we visited due to the stunning landscape surrounding with beautiful mountains every direction you turn. Aswell, as the history inside be the best preserved every room staged perfectly to really show how they lived. We highly recommend taking a tour of the nearby castles, such as the enchanting Pelisor Castle and the majestic Cantacuzino Castle. Each offers a unique glimpse into Romania’s rich history and architectural heritage.
Additionally no visit to Transylvania would be complete without paying homage to the legendary Count Dracula at Bran Castle. Perched atop a rugged hill, this iconic fortress is shrouded in myths and legends. Although the interior of the castle offers limited displays, its exterior is utterly mesmerizing, especially when surrounded by the picturesque Transylvanian countryside.

Day 3: Therme Bucharest – Complete Relaxation
On our final day, we treated ourselves to a day of ultimate relaxation at Therme Bucharest, Europe’s largest spa. Located just 10 minutes from the airport, this luxurious oasis offered a wide range of rejuvenating thermal pools, saunas, and wellness treatments. We indulged in the tranquil surroundings and left feeling completely revitalized. With cocktails on hand from the poolside bar and indoor outdoor pools it was great to spend a day here. If possible I would visit the day before your flight so that you can truly relax and watch the sunset from the lazy river. You can either reserve tickets before, which I would recommend during the busy summer months or queue and buy tickets on the day however, there is a limited capacity so tickets can be bought on their website or through the link below.
Food and Beverages: A Foodie’s Paradise
Romania pleasantly surprised us with its affordable and delicious cuisine. From wholesome traditional dishes like sarmale (cabbage rolls) and mici (grilled sausages) to mouth-watering pastries like plăcinte (cheese or meat-filled pastry), every meal was a delightful culinary adventure. Although the customer service might not always match the outstanding flavours, the satisfying taste of Romanian food more than made up for it.

When to visit
If you are contemplating a visit to Transylvania, then timing is everything to make the most of this picturesque region of Romania. The best time to visit Transylvania is either during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is at its warmest. This allows visitors to explore the lush Carpathian Mountains, home to the infamous Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle. Additionally, the countryside bursts into vibrant colours, making it ideal for hiking, cycling, or simply taking leisurely strolls through quaint villages. Alternatively, visiting in the shoulder months of April, May, September, and October, you get to enjoy the country with fewer tourists and see the mountains with its snowy topped peaks.
A long weekend in Transylvania offers a perfect blend of history, relaxation, and gastronomic indulgence. Whether exploring the mesmerizing castles, indulging in spa therapy, or delighting in the diverse Romanian cuisine, this region will leave an everlasting impression on any traveller. Transylvania’s captivating allure, combined with warm hospitality and unique experiences, exceeded our expectations and left us longing to return.
